When thinking about TEAM, the first lesson of “Lessons From The Geese” reads: “As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an ‘uplift’ for the birds that follow. By flying in a ‘V’ formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.”
We have all heard that the letters in TEAM stand for Together Everyone Achieves More. Personally, I often experience the team adventure as “Typically Everything’s Absolutely Messy.” That is a part of what this lesson is about. Another aspect is that there is no “I” in TEAM. Although, I do believe that an individual can be a team of one achieving goals as well. For example, Michael Phelps was on the Olympic Swimming Team which achieved unbelievable results. Yet, it is Michael Phelps’ individual accomplishments of being the most decorated Olympian of all time with a total of 22 medals, the most gold medals (18, double the second highest record holders), the most individual gold medals (11) and the most individual Olympic medals for a man (13) and more that we remember.
Since beginning my work with GIA Wellness, I have come to appreciate how working individually and within a team can bring about extraordinary results. However, I also don’t believe that this is a team in the true sense of the word. We are more of a community or a tribe working and achieving goals individually and yet, our individual results come together to accomplish a group and organizational goal. I have experienced the this tribe going for an unbelievable result and really pulling together, motivating each other, and celebrating the accomplishments along the way as well as at the end. Goal achievement is a very important aspect of the leadership and teamwork.
The lesson here rests on intense focus and the spirit of community. As a tribe, we are building a strong community of individuals, who know, like and trust each other. Concurrently, the members of the tribe help each other achieve the goal of the tribe. While making that happen, individual goals are also completed. Thus when the tribe is traveling in a common direction as a “team”, then they can move more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the movement of each other. As they say, “All ships rise with the tide.”
If you were to take the Dare 2 Dream, what would your team, your tribe, your community look like? Would you dare to be a part of a tribe that dreams big and achieves more together?
